New iOS versions of three New Jersey sports betting apps are now available on the Apple App Store.

Apple gave clearance to the BetStars, 888 and playMGM apps this week, giving iPhone and iPad users the ability to download the apps and bet on NFL games or anything else on the sports docket this week.

The playMGM NJ sports betting app went live on Android in August. BetStars and 888 both launched an Android app in September.

Apple’s clearance of the apps is significant because of a recent crackdown by Apple on gambling-related apps on the App Store in several jurisdictions. This is a clear indication that Apple’s ban on gambling-related apps does not extend to apps launched by licensed US sport betting operators and incorporated business entities.

NJ mobile sports betting apps had to wait until a month after retail sportsbooks operations opened up to launch in the state. Online and mobile sports betting has since dominated the emerging NJ sports betting market.

Delaware, Mississippi and West Virginia have all launched legal sports betting as well. Rhode Island and Pennsylvania are ramping up to do the same. So far, New Jersey is the only state that has launched statewide online and mobile wagering.

NJ online and mobile sports betting jumps ahead

In September, as the NFL season kicked off, revenue from online and mobile sportsbooks actually surpassed that of NJ’s physical sportsbooks. In fact, NJ sports betting apps reported $12.5 million in revenue throughout the month, compared to $11.4 million from sportsbooks inside NJ casinos and racetracks.

The NFL also helped the NJ sports betting industry almost double August numbers. New Jersey gamblers bet more than $184 million on sports throughout September, helping the state haul in some $2.6 million in tax revenue.

DraftKings Sportsbook on top

So far, the combination of the daily fantasy sports (DFS) giant DraftKings Sportsbook and PokerStars sister BetStars operating under the Resorts Casino Hotel license makes them top dogs in the budding NJ sports betting sector.

The pair combined to post a lofty $8,505,900 in online and mobile sports betting revenue in September. BetStars’ availability on the App Store can only help.

The only online and mobile sports betting product that was even close was DFS competitor FanDuel Sportsbook. It reported $2,852,500 in September revenue. The FanDuel app operates under the Meadowlands Racetrack license. Its retail FanDuel Sportsbook at Meadowlands Racetrack was the top-grossing physical sportsbook in the state last month. In fact, it posted $4,377,400 in revenue.

Borgata leads casino-based sportsbooks

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa’s Race & Sports Book continued to be the top-grossing casino-based sportsbook in NJ in September, posting $2,394,100 in revenue. Its playMGM online and mobile sports betting product is lagging behind the big players, posting just $120,900 in September revenue.

However, it has still helped Borgata post a total of $4,919,800 in sports betting revenue since launch. Once again, playMGM’s availability on the App Store can only help going forward.

Resorts and Meadowlands are currently in a tight race at the top of the NJ sports betting industry. FanDuel mobile and retail operations operating out of Meadowlands have combined to post $11,663,700 since launch. Only the mobile and small retail operations at Resorts have combined to post more in revenue, with a slightly bigger $11,853,800 since launch.

Caesars and 888 online and mobile sportsbooks combined to post a less than impressive $106,400 in revenue in September. Although, Apple’s clearance of the 888 iOS app should help those numbers improve in October.

With the entry of BetStars, 888 and playMGM into the iOS market, the total number of NJ sports betting apps available for Android and iOS devices is up to eight.
